What is inbound marketing
Also known as: inbound methodology, attraction marketing
Inbound marketing is the strategy of attracting customers with useful content and experiences, instead of interrupting people with ads, cold calls or purchased lists. The company publishes what its audience looks for, such as articles, videos and resources, gets found in search and on social media, and guides visitors toward a purchase. In HubSpot's methodology, the stages are attract, engage and delight.
An accounting firm publishes guides on the questions it hears most: how to start a company, when to switch business structures, which tax regime to choose. People searching those questions find the guides and can download a cost spreadsheet in exchange for their email.
Those who download receive related content over the following weeks and an invitation to talk. A year later, most new clients come through the guides, and the firm spends less on ads to win each one.
The three stages
HubSpot describes the three stages as a flywheel: satisfied customers refer, talk and come back, and that feeds the attract stage again.
| What happens | Examples | |
|---|---|---|
| Attract | Content and conversations that position the brand as a trusted advisor | Blog, SEO, videos, social media |
| Engage | Solutions that match the pain points and goals of visitors | Downloadable resources, email, sales conversations |
| Delight | Help for customers to succeed with the product | Onboarding, support, community |
Inbound and outbound
Inbound earns attention with content that answers questions and solves problems; people arrive because they chose to. Outbound pushes the message to people who have not shown interest, through cold calls, direct mail, interruptive ads or purchased lists.
In practice, companies combine both. Paid ads can promote inbound content, and a prospecting team can use the same resources to open conversations.
When inbound pays off
For urgent demand, impulse purchases or tight deadlines, inbound alone is usually too slow.
- When customers research before buying, as with professional services, software and high value purchases.
- When the sale is consultative and depends on trust and explanation.
- When the company has its own knowledge to teach, not just a product to advertise.
- When there is room to wait: results accumulate over months, not in the first week.
Inbound in the age of AI
HubSpot itself introduced Loop Marketing, with four stages (express, tailor, amplify and evolve), as an evolution for the AI era, and states that it does not replace inbound: it adds personalization and continuous iteration on the same customer centered foundation.
In search, AI generated summaries now answer simple questions right on the results page. Shallow content that repeats what already exists loses value; content with first hand experience, data and examples is still what attracts people close to buying.
How to measure it
- Qualified organic traffic from the searches that matter.
- Visitor to lead conversion rate.
- Progression from lead to opportunity and from opportunity to customer.
- Customer acquisition cost for the channel, compared with ads.
- Time between first contact and first purchase.
Frequently asked questions
What is inbound marketing?
The strategy of attracting customers with useful content and experiences, instead of interrupting people with ads and unsolicited contact.
What are the stages of inbound marketing?
In HubSpot's methodology, attract, engage and delight. Satisfied customers feed the attract stage again, in a continuous cycle.
What is the difference between inbound and outbound?
With inbound, customers arrive because they searched and found the content. With outbound, the company takes the initiative and pushes the message to people who have not shown interest.
How long does inbound take to work?
It usually takes months, because it depends on content being found in search and on building relationships. That is why many companies pair inbound with ads at the start.
Does inbound marketing work for small businesses?
It works when customers research before buying and the business has knowledge to share. Starting small, with the questions customers ask most, is a good path.
